Habitat Of The Alligator
All the species of crocodiles are living near the waters, on swampy areas, and lakes, near rivers and channels, and they are spending the majority of their time in the water. The Cajun area in Louisiana is the perfect place for those reptiles. They are cold blooded animals, so they need water to reduce the temperature variations. Usually, the crocodiles are spending the night in the water, and starting with the morning, they will find the swamps to bathe in the sun. Even if the Swamp people know the places where the crocodiles are hunting, lots of them ended up as prey during an alligator hunting session just because they were not paying attention.
When the heat is extreme, you can see the crocodiles staying with their mouth opened. This is because they can’t sweat, and this is the only method to evaporate the water, cooling the body a little. The Cajun people are saying that the crocodile is vulnerable then, as his senses are greatly reduced. The Swamp people are waiting for the hottest days of the summer, and then they would start the alligator hunting.
Social life
Although the alligators prefer to live in large groups, they also have their own territories. Knowing those territories is important for the Cajun people, as this is a great method to catch the biggest alligators while they are alone searching for new territories to expand. Usually, each group has a dominant male. He spends his time mostly in the water, patrolling the area. He also makes specific sounds, chasing away any other male that gets closer. For a simple tourist, the sounds might be just like any other, but the Swamp people know how to distinguish them for the alligator hunting.
On dry land, they can walk in different ways. Usually, you can see them walking with the lateral feet, but they can also run and sneak on their bellies. In the water, they can swim fast, but the power is not given by their feet, it is given by the rapid tale movements. They can stand still for hours, and if the mud dries on them, the Cajun people have many problems seeing them. The crocodile can stay under water for a long period, and some Swamp people are claiming that alligators can stand under water for one hour and more.
Food
The alligators are carnivores. The large maxillary and the aspect of the face are terrifying, and they suggest an aggressive behavior. The majority of people are terrified of the crocodiles, and this is the main reason for people conducting alligator hunting. However, the food depends on the surrounding area and the available prey. The babies are feeding with insects, small fishes, and shells. As they are growing fast and they can only eat small animals, they are continuously looking to hunt as babies. The Cajun people claim that baby alligators are spending all their day hunting, and the ingurgitation period is fast.
